OCALA-- College of Central Florida volleyball player Essence Bell was named the FCSAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the first voting period.
The freshman libero averaged 5.1 digs per set during the voting period, helping lead the Lady Patriots to a 6-1 record to kickoff the 2019 season. The six wins included a five-set win over two-time defending state and national champions Miami Dade College. Bell, reigning recorded double-digit digs in six of seven games, including a season-high 30 digs versus Miami Dade.
Bell, an Ocala native, was named the 2018 7A Florida Dairy Farmers Player of the Year after leading Vanguard High School to its third state championship title.
The Lady Patriots come into the week ranking No. 2 in the FCSAA State Volleyball Rankings and No. 18 in the NJCAA. CF will be back on the court on Friday as it makes up a game versus Gateway College. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Patriot Gym.
