OCALA--- The College of Central Florida women's volleyball team was on the verge of another national upset, but the Patriots couldn't close out NJCAA No. 2 Polk State College on Thursday night at Patriot Gym.
CF (11-9, 1-1 MFC) was up 2-1 on Polk State, but the Eagles clawed back to send it to five sets and defeat the Patriots 3-2 (27-25, 25-27, 21-25, 25-16, 15-9).
The Lady Patriots were up 24-22 in the first set, but Polk went on a 3-0 rally to pull ahead 25-24 and eventually secure the first-set win.
CF answered back, winning sets two and three, including a 7-0 start in the third set. Veronica Brod Farias secured the third-set win with a kill down the right line.
In the fourth, the pair were notched at 14-14, but Polk went on a 7-0 run down the stretch to send it to a fifth and final set.
It was all Polk in the fifth set, as the Eagles completed the rally after being down 1-2.
Setter Maria Idjilov recorded her second double-double as a Patriot with 35 assists and a team-high 19 digs.
With the loss, the Patriots are now 1-1 in conference play.
CF will head to Tyler, Tex. for a two-day invitational at Tyler Junior College Friday and Saturday. The Lady Patriots will return home and hit the road starting Tuesday for three consecutive conference road matches.
