Fonseca and Alvarez receive nation and state top honors

OCALA-- College of Central Florida volleyball players Rafaela Fonseca and Nathaly Alvarez were busy picking up multiple awards this offseason for their performance during the 2016 campaign.

The pair led the Lady Patriots to its sixth-straight conference title and a No. 1 state ranking for five consecutive weeks. As a result, Fonseca and Alvarez were named NJCAA All-Americans, bringing CF Volleyball's all-american total to seven. CF was only one of two schools to place two players on the NJCAA All-American list.

Just this past Wednesday the duo was also named to the AVCA NJCAA First and Second Team All-American list.

In addition to the AVCA and NJCAA's highest honor, Fonseca also received the state and conference's highest awards by being named Mid-Florida Conference and FCSAA Player of the Year. The first team all-state and all-conference selection finished the season Top 10 in total kills (322), recorded eight double-doubles and had five matches in which she recorded 15 or more kills. Fonseca notched a season-high 21 kills versus then No. 1 Hillsborough Community College and had a season-high 18 digs versus conference rivals Florida State College at Jacksonville (Oct. 13) and Santa Fe College (Nov. 5).

Alvarez came off a stellar freshman campaign in which she set the record for most kills or digs by a setter in a single match or season. The two-time NJCAA All-American earned FCSAA All-State and All-Tournament and MFC First Team All-Conference honors for a second year in a row. Alvarez finished the season with seven double-doubles and three triple-doubles, recording 20 or more assists in 17 matches and 10 or more kills in five matches as a setter. She notched a season-high 17 kills versus Palm Beach State College on September 10 and tallied a season-high 42 assists versus Santa Fe on October 25.
