Volleyball advances to state semifinals

OCALA--The College of Central Florida women's volleyball team has advanced to the semifinals at the FCSAA State Volleyball Championships after defeating FCSAA No. 2 Polk State College on Friday morning at the Bradenton Convention Center.  

CF, ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 5 in the nation, got off to a rocky start falling behind 1-5 at the beginning of the first set. They would rally back to take set one 25-21, and eventually the match, defeating the Eagles 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23) in a battle of the top two teams in the state.

Sophomore Nathaly Alvarez led the way with 16 kills, while Alyssa Gage and Kristin Schemm each had eight and Rafaela added seven. At the net, Gage totaled four blocks and Buse Ene had three.

CF will now face conference rival Santa Fe College tomorrow at 10 a.m. Winner will automatically qualify for the NJCAA National Volleyball Championship in Casper, Wyo. and advance to the state championship match on Sunday at 2 p.m. Loser will drop down to the consolation bracket with a chance at clinching the District O championship and a trip to the national tournament.
