Volleyball sends sophomores off in winning fashion

OCALA-- The College of Central Florida women's volleyball team capped off their final home match of the season with a straight-sets win over Pasco-Hernando State College on Thursday night.

The Lady Patriots sent their sophomores off in winning fashion, needing just an hour to defeat PHSC 25-7, 25-13, 25-14. Prior to the match, CF honored its five sophomores before taking the court one last time at Patriot Gym. Sophomores include Nathaly Alvarez, Alyssa Gage, Chelsea Chavers, Licie Leite, and Mid-Florida Conference Player of the Year Rafaela Fonseca.

Buse Ene (8 kills) and Fonseca (9 kills, 13 digs) led the offensive charge, while Alvarez tallied 33 assists and Leite (13 digs) and Chavers (20 digs) held up the backline.

CF closes out the regular season on Saturday when they head down State College of Florida for a tri-match with Indian River State College and SCF. The Lady Patriots will then gear up for the FCSAA State Volleyball Championship taking place November 4-6 in Bradenton, Fla. 

 

Sophomores honored:

Licie Leite is a two-year participant from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. She has appeared in 53 matches as a Patriot, totaling 130 kills, 212 digs and 41 assists. She has recorded 10 or more digs on 5 occasions with a career-high 13 digs against then FCSAA No. 1 HCC this past August. Licie was also named to the Mid-Florida Conference and FCSAA All-Academic teams for her performance off the court.

Chelsea Chavers came to CF from Bloomingdale High School in Brandon, FL. She is a two-year participant, appearing in 60 matches for the Patriots. To date, Chelsea has 491 career digs, recording 10 or more digs in 20 matches over the past two seasons. She recorded a career-high 29 digs this season against conference opponent Florida State College at Jacksonville. Chelsea was also named to the Mid-Florida Conference and FCSAA All-Academic teams for her performance in the classroom.

Alyssa Gage hails from nearby Lecanto, FL. She is also a two-year participant and has appeared in 59 matches for the Lady Patriots. She has recorded 156 total blocks and 296 kills during her time here at CF and is currently ranked Top 5 in the state for overall hitting percentage. Alyssa has tallied 5 or more blocks on 5 occasions with a career-high 10 total blocks coming this year against conference rival Daytona State on October 4…She has also recorded 10 or more kills in 8 matches with a career-high 15 kills this season against NJCAA No. 16 Northwest College. Alyssa was also received Mid-Florida and FCSAA All-Academic honors for her work in the classroom…. 

Rafaela Fonseca is a two-year participant from Minas Gerais, Brazil. She has appeared in 56 matches for the Lady Patriots and has recorded 17 career double-doubles during that span. The Mid-Florida Conference First Team honoree has totaled 570 kills and 576 digs. She has tallied 10 or more kills in 24 matches with a career-high 22 kills vs rival Santa Fe last October and a season-high 21 kills this year against then #1 HCC. Rafa has also recorded 10 or digs in 30 matches with a career-high 27 digs coming against Indian River in last year's state tournament.

Nathaly Alvarez is a two-year participant from Arecibo, Puerto Rico. She has appeared in 60 matches for the Lady Patriots and just came off a stellar freshman campaign. Nathaly earned NJCAA First Team All-American honors, as well as being named to First Team all-conference, all-state and all-tournament teams. She tallied 1,513 total assists as a freshman, ranking No. 1 in FCSAA, No. 3 in NJCAA... Against Snow College, she recorded a career-high 61 assists, which was two assists shy of CF single-game record. In her career as a Patriot, she has been named state player or setter of the week 7 times, recorded 6 triple-doubles and 14 double-doubles and amassed 1,976 total assists, 349 kills and 483 digs. Nathaly has recorded 10 or more digs in 13 matches, with her career-high 24 digs coming against conference rival Santa Fe last October…. She has also tallied 10 or more kills on 11 occasions.  To top it off, Nathaly set the record for most kills or digs by a CF setter in a single match or season.
