OCALA--The College of Central Florida women's volleyball team gutted out a hard-fought, five-set victory over the No. 1 team in the state, Hillsborough Community College, on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Gym.
The Lady Patriots found themselves working out of five-point jams in almost every set, but came together as a team and rallied to defeat the Hawks 25-20, 24-26, 25-20, 20-25, 15-11.
"We had some obstacles to overcome, but I am so proud of the heart that this team played with to come out with the victory today," said head coach Flavia Siqueira.
Sophomore leadership proved to be a vital spark in the five-set victory.
Rafaela Fonseca hammered 21 kills on the day, while Alyssa Gage bolstered the middle with 11 kills and libero Chelsea Chavers secured the backline with 24 digs. As a team, the Lady Patriots recorded a season-high 63 kills in the win.
CF now turns their attention to a crucial conference match against Daytona State College on Tuesday. The two teams are currently tied for first place in the Mid-Florida Conference. Match is set for 7 p.m. at Patriot Gym.
