Volleyball splits in home debut

OCALA--The College of Central Florida women's volleyball team split a pair of matches in its home debut on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Gym.

The Lady Patriots opened up their 2016 home stand against Palm Beach State College before rounding out the tri-match against State College of Florida.

In the opening match, CF jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, downing the Panthers 25-19, but errors plagued the Patriots over the next three sets. Palm Beach went on to take a 3-1 victory over CF, 19-25, 25-23, 28-26, 25-20.

Buse Ene tallied 19 kills while FCSAA Setter of the Week Nathaly Alvarez recorded her fifth double-double of the season, including a season-high 34 assists in the loss.

"It was not one of our best games," said head coach Flavia Siqueira. "We have some key injuries that have plagued our line up, but that's not an excuse. Lack of communication and inexcusable errors killed us throughout the match.

CF would redeem themselves against State College of Florida, defeating the Manatees in straight sets 25-17, 25-17, 25-10, reaffirming why they are No. 3 in the state and No. 10 in the nation. Nayrelis Pantoja and Alvarez led the attack with nine kills each, with Alvarez and Ivona Vojvodic each dishing out 18 assists.

"I was happy with how our players bounced back and made adjustments from the prior match," said Siqueira. "We show glimpses of being great, but we have to be more consistent… We have one more week to continue to work things before conference."

The five-time Mid-Florida Conference Champions will look to fine tune things against Pasco-Hernando State College and Broward College this coming week in preparation of their conference opener against rival Santa Fe College in two weeks.
