Volleyball goes 2-2 at SLCC Invitational

OCALA--The College of Central Florida women's volleyball team went 2-2 at the Salt Lake Community College "Inn"vitational over the weekend in Salt Lake City. 

The Lady Patriots, ranked No. 3 in the state and 10th nationally, opened up the two-day tournament on Friday against two Top 5 nationally-ranked teams- No. 5 Northwest College and No. 4 Iowa Western Community College.

CF surged to a 25-12 win in the opening set against Northwest before the Trappers answered back to take set two. In the end, the Lady Patriots were too much for Northwest, taking the match in four sets (25-12, 23-25, 25-19, 25-10). Alyssa Gage led the way with 15 kills, while FCSAA Player of the Week Nathaly Alvarez added 20 assists.

CF appeared to roll the momentum into game two versus No. 4 Iowa Western, taking the first set 25-21, but were unable to close out the Reivers in the fifth set, falling 25-21, 16-25, 17-25, 25-18, 8-15. Rafaela Fonseca posted a double-double (19 kills 12 digs), while Alvarez recorded a season-high 28 assists. 

Day two showed similar results.

The Lady Patriots took a decisive 3-0 victory (25-11, 25-20, 25-11) over Casper College before falling 3-0 (24-26, 18-25, 19-25) to host Salt Lake City Community College.

Top performers from the weekend include: Gage (33 kills), Alvarez (89 assists, 34 kills, 39 digs), Ivona Vojvodic (56 assists), and Fonseca (32 kills, 40 digs).

CF will be back on the court on Thursday as they head to Eastern Florida State College for a non-conference match at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Lady Patriots will make their regular-season home debut as they host a tri-match against Palm Beach State College and State College of Florida-Manatee.
