CF Volleyball downs NJCAA No. 1 Tyler, No. 5 W. Nebraska

TYLER, TEX.- The College of Central Florida volleyball team made a huge statement in the Tyler Junior College Tournament this past weekend in Tyler, Texas, going 3-1 on the weekend, and taking down the nation's No. 1 and No. 5 teams.

CF opened up play on Friday with a sweep of Temple (Tex.) 25-15, 25-21, 25-10, before a loss to national power Blinn (Tex.), ranked No. 3 in NJCAA.

Julymar Otero (12 kills, four blocks), Amanda Saunders (six kills, five blocks), Yaralismar Rodriguez (eight digs, one ace) and Kadeeja Griffin (six kills, four blocks) led the way for CF in their win over Temple

On Saturday, the Lady Patriots followed up with a sweep of the nation's No. 5 team, Western Nebraska, and a four-set victory over the nation's No. 1 ranked team, and tournament host, Tyler Junior College.

It marked the first time in school history that CF has knocked off a team ranked No. 1 in the nation in the sport of volleyball.

CF, ranked No. 8 in the nation and No. 2 in the state, improved to 14-5 with the victories in a tournament that saw them face the nation's No. 1, 3 and 5 teams in less than a 30-hour span.

Against Western Nebraska, Rodriguez closed out the match with an ace for the Patriots' first-ever win over WNCC, a perennial national power. CF took the match 25-11, 25-21, 26-24. Marcela Frazzoni (11 kills, two blocks), Otero (17 kills) and Rodriguez (17 digs) led the way for the Lady Patriots.

Additionally, Frazzoni and Otero combined for just three errors in Saturday's opening match.

From there, CF knocked off Tyler 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22. Frazzoni (15 kills), Rodriguez (17 digs), Otero (21 kills, nine digs) and Griffin (nine kills, three blocks) led the way for the Patriots.

CF will be back on the court tomorrow as they travel to Mid-Florida Conference rival Santa Fe for the first-ever volleyball match between the two schools. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
