OCALA- Julymar Otero's transition to the collegiate level was quite impressive for the College of Central Florida volleyball team.
Otero, a freshman from Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, earned the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Player of the Week honors with her efforts over the past weekend in the Hillsborough Community College Tournament.
Sparked by Otero, CF earned the No. 1 spot in this week's FCSAA Coaches Poll.
The Patriots, who went 3-1 in the tournament, totaled 161 points, 17 more than No. 2 Hillsborough.
Otero finished with 15 kills and 15 digs in CF's five-set win over the defending state champions and pushed the program's mark to 8-3 all-time against HCC.
Earlier in the tournament, Otero had 20 kills and 12 digs in a tough five-set loss to Daytona State, which snapped CF's 28-game winning streak against Mid-Florida Conference opponents.
CF, though, got things going behind Otero and won its final three matches in Tampa and avenged a defeat in last year's championship to the Hawks.
Otero became the first CF freshman to earn state player of the week honors since Vanessa Benke took home the honors on September 27, 2011.
The Patriots, who are ranked No. 13 in the NJCAA, also defeated Palm Beach State and St. Petersburg this past weekend. Overall, CF went 2-1 against ranked teams at HCC.
Daytona State, State College of Florida-Manatee and Miami Dade round out the top five teams in the coaches poll.
