OCALA--The College of Central Florida women's basketball team opened up the season with a win over Florida Southwestern State College on Tuesday night at Patriot Gym.
The Lady Patriots exchanged one and two-point leads with the Bucs throughout the game before pulling away in the final minutes of the fourth period to defeat FSW 57-55.
CF, who held FSW 0-for-18 from behind the 3-point line, went into the half up 28-27. The Bucs came back to tie things up at the end of the third period, 38-38. The Lady Patriots outrebounded the Bucs 52-46 and forced 25 turnovers on the night.
Returner Amanda Melosky and newcomer Gianni Ruemmeley led the offensive charge for the Lady Patriots, putting up 11 points apiece and combining for 15 rebounds. Other key contributors include Ocala native Shambria Washington (9 points), Deja Jones (6 points, 6 rebounds) and Nicola Mathews (6 points).
CF will be back on the court this weekend when they host a two-day shootout at Patriot Gym. They will host FCSAA No. 4 Northwest Florida State College on Friday at 6 p.m. and Miami Dade College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
