Women's Basketball defeats HCC for fifth-straight time

OCALA--The College of Central Florida women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to get past Hillsborough Community College 68-50 on Saturday night at Patriot Gym.

The Patriots held the Hawks to just 18 points and 28 percent shooting after halftime and won for the fifth-straight time over HCC dating back to last season.

CF used a 14-3 run in the third quarter to go up by 15 and put all the pressure squarely on the Hawks.

Marcella Rocha (14 points, eight assists), Mariah Bankhead (14 points) and Kiarah Mallory (13 points) were the top scorers for the Patriots.

Briana Mann added a career-high 14 rebounds for CF, who held a 54-42 edge on the boards.

The Patriots also forced 29 turnovers and scored 26 points off those miscues by the Hawks.

CF made 22-of-33 from the free throw line, led by Rocha, who hit 8-of-10.

Mallory was key in the third quarter, as she scored eight points to spark the big run for the Patriots.

With the win, CF improved to 4-4 in the Mid-Florida Conference and currently sits two games ahead of FSC-Jacksonville for the third and final playoff spot from the MFC to the state tournament.

The Patriots host the Blue Wave on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

CF has won the last five games with FSC-J including both match ups this season.
