OCALA- The College of Central Florida women's basketball maintained sole possession of first place in the Mid-Florida Conference with a 78-60 win over Hillsborough on Wednesday night.
"The most important thing is that we are now 1-0 in our final four-game set of the conference season," CF coach Tommy Jones said. "It was ugly tonight. I don't know if we looked down and saw that (HCC) had just six players, but this is conference and you have to go out and play as hard as you can.
"I'm to blame. We've got some things to fix and we will."
CF held a 48-29 rebounding edge on HCC and outscored the Hawks 16-1 in second-chance points.
Thais Oliveira (16 points, eight rebounds), Marcella Rocha (15 points, seven assists, five rebounds), Brittany Grant (12 points, seven assists, five rebounds), Valerie Hill (11 points, seven rebounds), De'Ja Jeffery (seven points), Sheanna James (seven points, six rebounds) and Quira Demery (six points, six rebounds) led the way for CF.
The Patriots made 31-of-67 shots and swept HCC (9-17, 0-9) for the first time since HCC joined the MFC five years ago.
CF led 40-32 at halftime after making 50 percent of its shots.
From there, the Patriots went up by as many as 20 points in the second half and rolled to the win.
HCC played the final four minutes of the game with just four players due to fouls.
The Patriots have won three straight against HCC in Ocala dating back to last season. Overall, CF has won four of the last five matchups against HCC.
CF returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they head on the road to play rival Santa Fe. The Patriots are 2-0 against the Saints this season.
The final two home games for CF will take place against FSC-J (February 18) and Daytona State (February 23). Entering Wednesday's game, the Patriots were one game ahead of Daytona State, the lone team to knock off CF this season in MFC play.
