Women's Basketball suffers first conference loss

DAYTONA BEACH- The College of Central Florida women's basketball team suffered its first defeat in Mid-Florida Conference play by a 66-52 score to Daytona State on Saturday afternoon.

The loss snapped a seven-game conference winning streak and a nine-game overall mark for the Patriots (21-5, 7-1).

CF, which had knocked off DSC on the road earlier this season on a late basket by Valerie Hill, fell behind 34-29 at halftime and were unable to rally.

The Patriots were led by Thais Oliveira, who scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Oliveira made 9-of-12 shots, but the rest of the team combined to make 3-of-37 in the loss.

For the game, CF also made just 1-of-9 from 3-point range.

The last defeat for the Patriots, prior to Saturday, took place in mid-December on the road against Eastern Florida State.

Since then, the Patriots, who hadn't played since last Saturday, had been climbing up the state and national poll.

The Falcons made 46 percent of their shots and played the Patriots even on the boards in the contest.

CF returns to action on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. when it hosts Hillsborough Community College. The Patriots are 2-0 this season against HCC, which is winless in MFC play.
