DAYTONA BEACH- The College of Central Florida women's basketball team improved to 4-0 in the Mid-Florida Conference with a 62-61 win over Daytona State.
Valerie Hill scored on a putback with 2.9 seconds remaining, as the Patriots maintained sole possession of first place in the MFC.
Sheanna James (14 points), Thais Oliveira (12 points), Brittany Grant (11 points), Hill (10 points) and Marcella Rocha (eight points) paced CF, which kept the Falcons in the game by missing 12-of-28 free throws.
The Patriots led by one at halftime and were able to hang on in the back-and-forth contest to win for the second time in Daytona.
Rocha attempted to give CF the lead late, but missed. However, Hill was there for the game-winning putback.
CF held a 36-31 rebounding edge, led by Oliveira (11 rebounds) and James (eight rebounds). The Patriots also held the Falcons to 35.4 percent shooting.
CF (18-4, 4-0) has now won six straight games and 10 of its 11 games.
The Patriots ended round one of MFC play with wins over each of the four other conference schools.
Next up for CF is a road trip on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hillsborough Community College. The Patriots, ranked No. 24 in the NJCAA and sixth nationally in the Massey Computer Poll, knocked off the Hawks by 10 earlier this season in Ocala.
