Lady Patriots battle back, defeat Indian River

OCALA-- It wasn't pretty, but the College of Central Florida women's basketball team will take its 60-51 road win over Indian RIver State on Friday night.

The Patriots (12-3) won their sixth game in a row, as they battled back late for a win over the Pioneers.

"We trailed for about three-fourths of the game and were able to pull it out," CF coach Tommy Jones said. "It was tough playing back-to-back nights and we played everyone to try and get the right combination out there.

"We were finally able to snap out of it and get things going down the stretch."

CF was led by Thais Oliveira with 20 points. The reigining NJCAA National Player of the Week was the lone Patriot player to score in double figures. Oliveira has averaged 20 points in three games over Indian RIver this season.

She has scored at least 20 points in four of her last five games and the lone game where she didn't, Oliveira had 19. In all, Oliveira has scored in double figures in 14-of-15 games and the only time she didn't, she finished with nine points.

Brittany Grant and Valerie Hill scored seven points each for CF, while Marcella Rocha and Briana Mann had six points each.

"We responded better late," Jones said. "We didn't play that well, but the most important thing is that we were able to get the win."

CF has now defeated Indian River three times this season by a combined 40 points.

Over the last two games against the Pioneers, the Patriots have allowed an average of 42 points.

CF is 5-0 versus IRSC over the past two seasons.

The Patriots will visit Eastern Florida State on Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. CF won the first meeting with EFS 78-57 on December 5. Overall, the Patriots are 3-0 over the Titans over the last two seasons.
