Women's Basketball surges past Southern Union

TALLAHASSEE- The College of Central Florida women's basketball team used a strong defensive performance to close out Southern Union State on Wednesday afternoon in the Tallahassee Courtyard Classic.

The Patriots (7-3) held Southern Union scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the second half and pulled away for a 72-43 win to even their record at 1-1 in two games in the event.

One night after battling hard against defending state champion Chipola, CF built a 29-20 halftime lead and turned up the defensive intensity after halftime.

"We got off to a slow start and were kind of sluggish in the early going," Patriots coach Tommy Jones said. "We didn't play anyone more than 25 minutes and were a little bit off early, but we really turned things around with our defense."

Quira Demery led the Patriots with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Thais Oliveira added nine points and seven rebounds.

In the two-game event, Demery led CF with 32 points, while Oilveira contributed 22.

De'ja Jeffery came off the bench to add eight points, three rebounds and three assists for the Patriots out of the backcourt.

CF will return home to face Tallahassee Community College on December 3 at 6 p.m.

The Patriots lost by eight points on the road to TCC earlier this season.

Two nights later, CF will host Eastern Florida State, before a road rematch against St. Petersburg College on December 6.

"We've got to keep working hard and get better every day," Jones added.
