OCALA-- NJCAA No. 25 College of Central Florida men's basketball team downed No. 23 Gulf Coast State College on Saturday night at Patriot Gym.
The stage was set, a battle between a pair of Top 25 teams to close out night one of the Florida College's Men's Basketball Shootout.
What was supposed to be a close game, turned into a dominant performance from the Patriots on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
CF (10-1) took a twelve-point lead into the half and then exploded for a season-best 58 second-half points to defeat the Commodores 106-76.
On the night, the Patriots shot over 50 percent from the field (61 percent in the second half) and knocked down 13 three-pointers. Rajan Barnes and Van Turner Jr. accounted for eight of the 13 three-pointers on the night.
On the defensive side of the ball, CF out-rebounded Gulf Coast 48-33 and forced 22 Commodore turnovers. CF held GCSC to less than 40 percent shooting from the field.
Barnes had a career night, partnering with Kevin Hunt Jr. to lead the CF offensive attack with 17 points apiece. Antwan Maxell added 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Aside from Barnes, Hunt and Maxwell, three other Patriot players recorded double-digit outings, including: Canberk Kus (15 points), Turner (12 points), and Xavier Barmore (10 points).
CF will return to the court tomorrow when they close out the shootout against Miami Dade College at 8 p.m.
