The College of Central Florida Patriots started the season winning ten of eleven games, but dropped their second game in a row Friday afternoon falling 6-3 to the South Florida State College Panthers. The Pats got on the board first in the second inning when Tre Hondras singled, stole second base and scored on a Garrett Wallace single. The Panthers quickly answered in their half of the second inning when Jadiel Martinez doubled to deep center scoring Andrew Cox and Nico Saladino. The Pats scratched across a run to tie the game at 2 on a Hondras sacrifice fly in the third inning.
It was all South Florida from there on in as the Panthers built up a 6-2 lead on a home run by Zeddrick Burnham, an RBI double by Bryce Bitting, and a run scoring single from Hunter Wilder. The Panthers used a trio of relief pitchers over the final six innings holding the Pats to only one run. Patriots Assistant Coach Jon Koenigsfeld stated, "We just couldn't string any hits together today. Hopefully we will bounce back in our doubleheader tomorrow." Jeslyn Whitehead led the CF offense with three hits on the day. Logan Clayton started for the Pats going four innings, allowing one earned run and striking out four.
The Patriots will be back in action on Saturday playing a doubleheader at Indian River State College. Game one will now start at 10:00 AM due to incoming rain in the forecast.
