OCALA--The College of Central Florida baseball team blanked NJCAA No. 15 Palm Beach State College 5-0 on opening day in Lake Worth, Fla.
Sophomore Luis Medina opened up the scoring affair with a two-run home run in his first at bat of the 2018 season.
It was a scoreless, pitching dual for the next six innings until sophomore outfielder David Flores delivered a two-run double with bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth inning to put CF up 4-0. An inning later, Jordan Morrow added an insurance run after scoring off a passed ball.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ben Koff delivered in several key situations for the Patriots, including a two on, one out situation in the bottom of the fifth where Palm Beach had runners on second and third. Koff struck out the next two batters to close out the side and preserve the lead.
Koff and newcomer Franklin Hernandez combined to strike out 13 batters on the day. Koff didn't allow a run on two hits and struck out seven in five innings for the win.
Reliever Hernandez brought electric stuff in the backend of the game, not allowing a run on two hits and struck out six.
CF travels to Indian River State College of Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for Noon.
