OCALA--The College of Central Florida baseball team kicked off a three-game series against Lake-Sumter State College on Monday afternoon at Goodlett Field, defeating the LakeHawks 11-5 in game one.
CF got on the board in the bottom of the second inning off a throwing error by LSSC's catcher Brad Nenna. Nenna tried throwing out Vinny Addona stealing second, but a misthrow scored CF's David Flores on third.
An inning later, the Patriots exploded for a five-run inning off a series of singles and sacrifice flies from Christian Smallwood, Luis Medina, Matt Coello and Flores. CFwent on to plate five more insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings to thwart a possible LakeHawk rally.
CF's Nate Pearson kept the LSSC offense at bay, allowing just one run on four hits and struck out nine in six complete innings. Pearson currently leads the state and nation in total strikeouts with 99.
CF will be back in action on Wednesday as they head to Leesburg for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
