OCALA--College of Central Florida baseball team fell to reigning Mid-Florida Conference champions Santa Fe College on Monday afternoon at Goodlett Field.
CF (4-7 MFC) couldn't overcome the five errors as the Saints (6-2) took advantage of the fielding miscues to shutout the Patriots 6-0.
NJCAA Pitcher of the Week Nate Pearson held the Saints hitless for 2.1 innings before Mikey Navarette hit a double down the left field line. A batter later, Navarette would come around and score when first baseman Luis Medina mishandled a hard chopper that ricocheted off his body. Another run would come around to score as SF took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third.
Santa Fe added four more insurance runs (two earned) in the fifth and ninth innings to solidify the win.
On the day, Pearson, the nation's strike out leader (81), scattered six hits and gave up one earned run while striking out eight in the loss. Jake Grenus came in to relieve Pearson in the seventh, allowing one earned run on four hits and struck out four in three innings of work.
CF will travel to Gainesville on Wednesday to close out the three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The Saints currently lead the series 2-0 as they rallied past the Patriots with a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to win it 10-9 in Game 1 in Gainesville.
