WINTER HAVEN- The College of Central Florida baseball team is headed to the Region 8 Tournament following a 10-6 win over Miami Dade College on Monday afternoon in the play-in game between teams that finished third in their respective conferences.
CF (32-17) will kickoff the state tournament on Sunday, May 15 againts St. Petersburg College. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
The Patriots took the lead for good with a single run in the top of the eighth, followed by a four-run effort in the ninth.
From there, Heyer and B.J. Harmon came up with RBI singles, while Connor Crile added a two-run single to close out the scoring for CF, who led 5-1 after the top of the fourth.
Miami Dade battled back to tie the game at 5 in the sixth inning, but David Lebron came in to help shut down the Sharks down the stretch.
Lebron went five innings in relief and allowed two runs on four hits to get the win.
Heyer had a monster day for CF at the plate.
The University of Kentucky signee went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. He finished with a double and triple and was just a home run from hitting for the cycle in CF's biggest game of the year to date.
Harmon (1-for-6, run scored, RBI), Cassala (2-for-6, RBI), Crile (1-for-4, run scored, two RBI), Levi Hollingsworth (2-for-6), Kevin Gomez (3-for-4, run scored, RBI), Bradley Felkel (1-for-4, run scored, RBI) and N.J. Williamson (1-for-4, two runs scored) backed Heyer in the win.
With the win, CF gained a measure of revenge on the Sharks, who they lost to in Polk County back in 2014 in the Region 8 Tournament.
