ST. PETERSBURG- The College of Central Florida baseball team jumped out to a quick lead en route to a 9-6 victory over FCSAA No. 1 St. Peterburg College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Patriots jumped to a 7-0 lead and held off a late charge by the Titans for their second win in a row.
CF (5-4) scored three runs in both the first two innings and a single run in the third, before SPC battled back with four in the bottom of the third.
From there, the Patriots pushed their lead back to five and held off SPC down the stretch.
Ryan Crile (3-for-5, three runs scored, RBI, double), Christian Khawam (2-for-5, RBI), Justin Ambrosino (2-for-4, two runs scored, RBI, double), Luke Heyer (1-for-4, run scored, three RBI, triple), Colby Brown (1-for-5, run scored, RBI), Malik Tatis (1-for-5) and David Rodriguez (1-for-4, run scored) led CF at the plate.
The Patriots also took advantage of five errors by the Titans.
Zach Whitaker earned the win on the mound for the Patriots after he allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Whitaker walked three and struck out four.
Heyer, meanwhile, earned the save, as he shut down the Titans over the final 1 1/3 innings of the game.
CF returns to action on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a road trip to South Florida State. The Patriots defeated SFSC to kick off their regular season home schedule this past Friday.
