Ocala, FL-- College of Central Florida baseball coach Marty Smith is closing in on another milestone.
Smith, the highly-successful coach of the Patriots, is now within three wins of joining the 600-win club among the nation's JuCo baseball coaches.
Back in 2011, Smith became just the fourth coach in Florida JuCo history to reach the 500-win mark when CF beat Macomb (Ill.) 12-11 on March 11. Entering that season, there were 49 coaches all-time in the nation who had reached the 500-win mark in JuCo baseball.
Now, Smith will have a chance to make even more history, as his team is playing some of its best baseball of the season in Mid-Florida Conference action.
In 2011, Tallahassee's Mike McLeod went over the 700-win mark and is currently the winningest active coach in Florida.
Smith has been the head coach at CF since 1994.
He spent three years as an assistant before taking over the head coach spot at his alma mater.
During his time at CF, he has taken the program to the JuCo World Series twice, has won five MFC titles and reached the state tournament on seven occasions.
