Six-run first inning propels Patriots past Daytona

Ocala, FL-- A quick start was all the College of Central Florida baseball team needed to stay atop the Mid-Florida Conference.

The Patriots scored six times in the opening inning and went on to knock off Daytona State 11-5 on Friday afternoon at Goodlett Field.

Collin Woody (4 for 5, five RBI, three runs scored, triple, double), N.J. Williamson (hit, run scored, RBI), Enderson Velasquez (3 for 5, three runs scored), Christian Khawam (2 for 5, two runs scored), Ryan Smith (3 for 4, three RBI, run scored), Justin Ambrosino (1 for 4, double, RBI) and Robby Jolley (1 for 4, RBI) led CF at the plate.

Robby Frantzis got the win in relief, but Hunter Halsey's strikeout with two outs and bases loaded in the seventh squelched a rally by the Falcons, who totaled 15 hits (as did the Patriots), but left 17 runners on base.

Woody's three-run triple was the big hit of the first, as the first five CF hitters recorded hits.

Smith and Jolley also delivered RBI singles in the first for the Patriots, who are now 2-0 against Daytona this season.

CF has won five straight games, all in conference play, and six of its last seven MFC outings.

The Patriots have won their last five conference home games and are 6-2 overall against MFC foes at Goodlett Field.

Co-conference leader St. Johns River faced Santa Fe College at home late Friday night.

The Vikings and Saints entered Wednesday tied atop the conference with CF, before SJRSC made it two teams atop the league, following its 8-0 win over the Saints, while the Patriots downed the Falcons 8-4 in Volusia County.

CF visits Daytona State on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
